IQ test is the main method to measure human intelligence since the 19th century. Although there are many criticism of its accuracy and reliability over the past few decades, the IQ tests is still the most common type of measuring mental ability. Here are 6 surprising facts about IQ tests.

1. Men and women’s IQ scores vary

Some researches show that there is a quite difference between male and female’s IQ scores. Male tend to be smarter on spatial awareness, whereas female get higher scores in language development and emotional intelligence. Despite that, their overall intelligence is about to the same.

2. IQ is related to breastfeeding

  Following a study of measuring the effect of breastfeeding on children’s cognitive development who was about 6.5 years old in 2008, we can see that breastfeeding has a connection with children’s IQ. These children were given an IQ test to evaluate their academic performance and cognitive ability. As the results, those who were breastfed had higher scores and better academic achievement.

3. IQ tests were primarily used to diagnose mental retardation

The IQ tests are used to diagnose mental retardation and separate them from mental illness. According to the Binet - Simon’s test from the early 1990s, people who has an IQ score below 70 was considered to have mental problem.

4. IQ tests only measure certain intellectual skills

IQ tests do not measure all levels of intelligence and career success. Instead of that, IQ tests just measure some intellectual abilities such as analytical, mathematical and spatial skills are not used to measure creativity, artistic, emotional, leadership and social skills.

5. Environmental factors affect IQ

Different environment factors can affect to human intelligence such as malnutrition, socio-economic status, stress, support structure and attitude. Moreover, quality of education also has an effect on IQ scores. Students in poorly funded schools often score lower than those at financially stable schools.

6. Birth order does not influence IQ

It’s not true that the oldest children are smarter and more succeed than the others. A child’s intelligence does not depend on the order in which they were born, but to be affected by their gender, personality, age difference, family size and parental age.
